The Artist
Painter of light, silence, and the spaces between
Rita Montrosse is a contemporary painter working in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Born in Florence and now based between Milan and London, her work is rooted in the European tradition of painting while remaining in constant dialogue with the present.
Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and later at the Royal College of Art in London, Rita developed a practice that resists easy categorisation. Her paintings move between figuration and abstraction, between the intimate and the monumental — always returning to the fundamental question of what paint can hold.
Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe and North America, and is held in private and institutional collections in Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. She is represented by Galleria Contemporanea in Milan and The Modern Gallery in New York.
Rita accepts a limited number of commissions each year. She is also available for artist talks, residencies, and collaborative projects with galleries and cultural institutions.
On painting
“I am interested in the moment before a painting becomes itself — the hesitation, the layering, the decision to leave something unresolved. That is where the life is.”
